There is one more article that has to be written on South East Asia. It deals with toilets. It accumulates all the experiences I have made with different types of facilities when travelling through Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia.
Above you can see the required gear. Equipped like that almost nothing can happen to you. From bottom to top:
- You wear flip-flops (Australian: thongs), so you won't get your feet or socks wet. It is very common in SEA that showers and toilets are in the same room. Unlike in Europe there won't be such a thing as a basin for the water of the shower, but just a drain (that's a hole in the floor). If you're lucky, the inclination of the floor will ensure that the water really runs off, but sometimes the drain is the highest spot of the toilet-shower, and therefore the floor is always wet. Yet, the water from the shower is still the most pleasant liquid to wet the floor. In fact, from time to time I was glad that I was wearing my boots.
- It is recommended you wear shorts or you turn up your trouser legs. The reasons obviously have to do with the previous statement.
- Bring your own toilet paper. Especially in Malaysia you will almost certainly not find any paper in the toilets. Instead, you will find a tube that is attached next to the toilet. It is the kind of tube I would use to water a garden back home. We learned that the Indians use their left hand for tidying up after doing number two and for this reason never use their left hand for eating or touching other people. But we never figured out how exactly they use it and we never quite made it ourselves to give it a try. (See also toilet in wikipedia).
- Bring your head torch. Though very seldom, from time to time it happens that there is a toilet but no light. It happend to me for example in Taman Negara because they had a power breakdown, and also in Siem Reap.
As in France or Spain, in many places in SEA there are no "normal" toilets but so called "squat toilets" (German: Hocktoilette). In the beginning they are quite annoying, but once you got used to them you learn to appreciate their advantages (as stated in the above mentioned wikipedia articles).
Sometimes you will even find signs telling you that you shall not throw any paper into the toilet but into the waste box next to the toilet. As a European person used to well-functioning canalisation you will feel quite inhibited to throw your used paper into the bin, but you can cause a little disaster by not following this request.
And one thing that is not desired but very helpful for those who cannot persevere in a half standing and half sqatting position for a long enough time: Some people also stand on the toilet pan to do their business.
