My heading refers to a phrase from
FF Coppola's adaptation of Joseph Conrad's masterpiece novel "The Heart of Darkness". The barbaric loss of all human dignity that characterises the rule of the Khmer Rouge (1975-1979) reminds many visitors of memorials and documentation sites of the 3rd Reich, and the visitor centre of the execution grounds that are known as the Killing Fields have the same disturbing quiet and peaceful atmosphere of the concentration camp memorials you can visit in Germany and Poland. In fact, our Khmer guide stressed that some people consider the Cambodian genocide - if this comparison is possible at all - as even more cruel than what happened in Germany because not even family bonds were strong enough to overcome the madness, fanatic Khmer Rouge even denounced their own kin and thus brought about their demise.
I made one observation at the
Tuol Sleng memorial (prison M21), where pictures of the leading Khmer Rouge caders are displayed side by side with so-called combatants and other people who were more or less involved. The pictures have suffered quite a bit from (understandable) vandalism of visitors. The image of Pol Pot has been removed completely, all the other portraits are damaged considerably. And in many cases the eyes have been scratched out or painted over. What is the significance of removing the eyes of people in this symbolic way and give them this horrifying appearance? Is it to turn them into ghosts, souls that shall never rest, so that they experience the horror of their own monstrosity?
