Of course Indy also needs a competent local guide with a sense of humour and hidden deus-ex-machina-qualities (to be discovered in dangerous situations).
Temple entrances are usually guarded by little dragon-like monsters with lion bodies (even though there were never any lions in the area; in fact, the images were inspired by Chinese Buddhist iconography). Another popular sight are the demons pulling at the body of a giant seven-headed snake called Waga (in order to churn the ocean of milk - don't worry if this doesn't make any sense to you).
Some of the temples have fallen apart over the centuries, and nature is claiming back what was once taken from her.
One of our favourites, Bayon temple inside the Angkor Thom (!) area. It's the temple of faces.
Under construction: After 25 years of building the basic structure of this pyramid shaped temple, it was hit by a flash of lightning. The king, who was also the person who ordered the temple to be built, considered that a bad omen (the gods probably disagreed with the location) and dismissed the project completely. Therefore the sandstone and granite is mostly bare of the usual carvings you can find all over the other temples.
Talking about carvings: They are usually everywhere. Above you can see a small (!!!) section of the
Ramayana myth, carved into one of the walls of Ang Kor Wat. The storytelling is not exactly what we consider straight, in fact it focusses more on epic battles than
Peter Jackson ever did in his Extended Special Editions.
In some cases Khmer Rouge iconoclasm was the reason for the destruction of religious imagery in the temples, but some damage dates back to the times when Cambodia switched from the Hindu religion to Buddhism (which occurred several times). On each occasion, the carvings in the temples had to be adapted. The example above shows a merely ornamental carving on the wall of a Hindu temple. At the bottom you can still see the remains of a sitting Buddha that has been removed.
This little weirdo is the strangest creature I ever saw. I might consider casting him/her/it (?) for one of my next movie projects.
